Abstract
Study Design – Prospective interventional study
Purpose – To assess the role of preoperative Nd: YAG Laser anterior capsulotomy in managing intumescent cataracts.
Methods – Total 50 eyes of 50 patients with intumescent cataract were enrolled in this study. Preoperative Nd: YAG laser anterior capsulotomy was done with 1.2 mJ. Immediate gush of liquified cortex was seen. AC depth was measured by ASOCT and IOP was measured by non contact tonometer, immediately before and after procedure. Intraoperative complications were noted.
Results – Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy could be successfully done in all patients with one or two shots. Mean increase in AC depth noted on ASOCT was 0.20 mm. All surgeries were done by a single surgeon, and all the surgeries were uneventful.
Conclusion – Preoperative Nd:YAG laser anterior capsulotomy is a safe and effective technique to manage thick intumescent catarcts.
