Abstract
Purpose: To study the surgical outcome of AMT and SLET(autologous+allogenic) in cases of limbal stem cell deficiency due to alkali burn.
Method: This is a retrospective, interventional case series of 12 patients of alkali burn, who underwent either AMT (5 patients) or SLET (autologous or allogenic-7 patients) with ocular surface reconstruction in duration of 1 year and followed for 1 year.
Result: Mean age was 21 years with male to female ratio was 3:1. 5 eyes presented in acute stage with grade 4-5 chemical injury, 5 eyes presented in chronic stage with unilateral LSCD and 2 eyes with bilateral total LSCD, grade 6 chemical injury. Complete epithelisation with total corneal avascularisation was obtained in all the cases with good visual gain. Complications seen were haem under hAM, focal recurrence and Symblepharon.
Conclusion: In a developing country like India, with limited facilities in the healthcare system, AMT & SLET are boon for patients with LSCD.
