Abstract
Design: Prospective interventional comparative study
Purpose: To compare outcomes of conventional pars plana vitrectomy (CPPV) and PPV with short term perfuorocarbon liquid (PPV-PFCL) for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment (RRD) associated with Giant Retinal Tear (GRT).
Methods: GRT-RRD eyes underwent CPPV or PPV with PFCL tamponade for 5 days followed by second staged surgery. Outcomes assessed at 9-months were anatomical success, final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and resurgery rates.
Results: Thirty eyes (1 eye/subject) were included with 41.6±16.5 years mean age. The final attachment rate was 83% (15/18) in PPV-PFCL group and 75% (9/12) in CPPV group. BCVA improved from 1.87±0.5 logMAR to 1.26±1logMAR at final follow-up in PPV-PFCL group and from 2.01±0.6logMAR to 1.54±0.71logMAR in CPPV group (p <0.05). PPV-PFCL group had lower resurgery rates (p<0.05).
Conclusion: PPV with PFCL endotamponade had good outcomes with less risk of slippage and lower resurgery rate.
