Abstract
Purpose- To determine the ocular and systemic risk factors and outcomes of paediatric keratitis in Eastern India (Bihar).
Study Design- Cases series
Methods- Review of 16 cases of paediatric keratitis (age <12 years) that underwent clinical and microbiological evaluation in a duration of 6 months.
Results- 7 of 16 patients required surgery under GA. Visual prognosis was assessed by Evaluation Under Anaesthesia. The mean age of presentation was 3 months. 2 children of pre- pubescent age group with a history of trauma were also included. A male-female ratio of around 1:3 was seen and the average duration after which the case presented was around 15 days. Improper immunization, and history of steroid use and bottle feed also played an indirect role.
Conclusion- Identifying risk factors, underlying causative organisms and early determination of need of medical or surgical treatment decide the success rate.
