Abstract
Purpose: Corneal breakdown (CB) in thyroid eye disease (TED) is an ocular emergency necessitating expeditious orbital decompression. This study aims to assess outcome after decompression
Method: All consecutive TED patients who underwent decompression for corneal breakdown between Nov 2011 and May 2023 were included. The outcome measure was best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), proptosis, clinical activity score (CAS) and proportion of globe salvage
Results: Thirty- two eyes of 22 patients were included. Mean age was 44+15.24 years. The mean BCVA before decompression was 1.13+0.94. Mean degree of proptosis was 25.5+3.67mm and mean CAS was 4.25+1.27. At a median follow up of 10 months, after decompression the mean BCVA improved to 0.64+0.88, mean proptosis measured 21.05+2.30 and CAS was 0.34+0.55. At final follow up, 29 eyes achieved globe salvage while three eyes were eviscerated
Conclusion: Expeditious decompression in TED with CB achieves high globe salvage and good visual outcome
