Abstract
Allergic conjunctivitis is one of the most commonly encountered external eye diseases. Consensus for allergic eye disease management mandates the need for skin prick test and environmental modifications before any pharmacological treatment is given. However, skin prick test for eye diseases is remotely done in India. To study the demographics, associated allergic diseases, and the profile of allergens, a prospective study is conducted. Patients aged 5-15 years, diagnosed with VKC in the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Squint
A total of 40 patients, symptomatic for more than 6 months underwent skin prick test.
80% of the patients( n=32) were positive for the test. Out of those, dust mite ( Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) is most commonly found, followed by Cockroach, Bloomia tropicalis and other species of dust mites like Dermatophagoides farinae. Based on the test results, avoidance of allergens and immunotherapy for the dust mites has improved the symptoms in these patients.
