Abstract
Study design-cross sectional study Purpose-To evaluate dry eye status in type2 DM and association between dry eyes and retinopathy in patients with type 2DM.Methods-100 patients with type 2DM and100 age and sex matched controls were enrolled.The dry eye status was evaluated using OSDI(ocular surface disease index)system score,ocular surface staining score ,tear film break up time and schirmer test results.Presence of severity of DR were determined by fundus examination and graded according to ETDR criteria Results-among 100 diabetics 57% had significant dry eye.OSDI score shows significant dry eye in Diabetics with DR. Schirmer test,TBUT values were significantly lowered in diabetics as compare to controls, positive association seen in dry eye and severity of DR(p<0.005) with more prevalence of dry eye in advanced DR group Conclusion-Dry eye and DR share a common association in DM. Dry eye is more frequent in patients with longer duration of DM and in patients with DR.
