FP1702 : Complications Faced By Residents in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery and Phacoemulsification

Abstract

STUDY DESIGN Retrospective Cohort Study
PURPOSE To compare the reduction in complications with experience in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery(MSICS) & Phacoemulsification.
METHODS 10 residents who underwent training in 2021, 2022 were studied.Their surgical outcome was monitored with post op UCVA, intraoperative complication, & resurgery.Complications per 100 surgeries were studies with multivariate logistic regression methods.
RESULTS A total of 17659 surgeries were done.Out of 17186 MSICS ,2052 eyes(11.62%) had complications,1644 eyes(9.31%) had resurgeries.Out of 473 phacoemulsification, 1367 eyes(7.74%) had complication,969 eyes(5.49%) had resurgeries.The rate of complications & resurgeries decreased by 16% & 9.2% respectively per 100 additional MSICS and by 8.6% & 5.02% respectively per 10 additional phacoemulsification.
CONCLUSION The rate of complications steadily decreased with experience. The MSICS trained residents had lesser complications in phacoemulsification.
