Abstract
Purpose: Show the impact of stress and anxiety on physiological parameters of the ophthalmic surgeon intra operatively.
Method: 110 cataract patients were divided in two groups, Group 1 had 55 patients of simple cataract and Group 2 had 55 patients with complicated cataracts and ocular/ systemic co morbidities. Results: In group 1, the average systolic BP of surgeon taken pre operatively and post operatively was 125.42 mm of Hg and 122.45 mm of Hg respectively whereas in group 2, average systolic BP of surgeon taken pre operatively and post operatively was 145.98 mm of Hg and 137.44 mm of Hg respectively (p value <0.05). In group 1, the average diastolic BP of surgeon taken pre operatively and post operatively was 84.85 mm of Hg and 81.98 mm of Hg respectively whereas in group 2, it was 87.73 mm of Hg and 86.02 mm of Hg respectively (p value <0.05).
Conclusion: Stress handling guidelines for surgeons should be laid, in view of increasing rates of burnout amongst surgeons.
