FP1582 : Heparinised irrigation fluid vs Heparinised PCIOL on post op inflammation after cataract surgery

Abstract

AIM: To compare the effectiveness of Heparinised irrigation fluid vs Heparin surface modified PCIOL in postoperative inflammation after cataract surgery in Diabetic patients.
METHODS: The comparative prospective study included 25 eyes implanted with Heparin surface modified PCIOL and 25 eyes implanted with acrylic PCIOL and 5000 IU (5ml) of heparin injected into 500ml of balanced salt solution. Post operative inflammation, cellular reaction and pigment dispersion was assessed. Patients were followed up on POD1, POD7, and POD28.
RESULTS: Heparinised IOL were found to be statistically better than heparinised irrigation fluid and acrylic PCIOL in terms of AC cells (p<0.001), AC flare (p<0.001) and pigment dispersion (p<0.001) in the early post op period.
CONCLUSION: Heparinised irrigation fluid used along with acrylic PCIOL is not as effective as Heparin surface modified PCIOL in reducing early postop inflammation. However, by day 28 the results were the same in both groups.
