Abstract
Study- Design Cross sectional observational
Purpose- Proportion of cataract and glaucoma in children of nephrotic syndrome on prednisolone. Awareness among caregivers for ocular complications.
Methods- Glaucoma and cataract was assessed in 100 children (5-18 years) of nephrotic syndrome receiving oral steroids for over 12 weeks. Caregiver & treating paediatrician awareness level regarding ocular complications of steroids checked by questionnaire
Results- 4% children had posterior sub capsular cataract which was visually insignificant. 5% had glaucoma/disc suspect. Mean IOP 16 in R and 17mmHg in L eye. None of the parents knew about ocular side effects. All paediatricians were aware of side effects of steroids.
Conclusion- Nephrotic children on long term steroids are at risk of developing cataract and glaucoma requiring close monitoring by caregivers and physicians. There is a need of raising awareness regarding ocular side effects of steroids use among caregivers and physicians.
