FP1394 : Aravind Pseudoexfoliation Study- 10 year Postoperative Results

Abstract

Purpose During a 10-year period, we compared rates of IOL decentration, Nd:YAG laser for posterior capsule opacification (PCO), and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in eyes with and without pseudoexfoliation (PEX) undergoing cataract surgery. Methods This is a prospective comparative interventional study of 930 cataract patients with and 476 cataract patients without uncomplicated PEX who underwent phacoemulsification. All were randomized to either 1 or 3-piece IOL. Results Ten-year follow-up rate was 82.2% in PEX and 85.6% in control group. IOL decentration (2.36% versus 1.68%, P = .4) and Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates (5.7% versus 5.67%, P = .98) were similar in PEX and control groups. At 10 years, logMAR BCVA was better in control than PEX group (0.08 versus 0.12; P = .035). Conclusion In this large-scale, long-term, prospective comparative study of cataract surgery in eyes with uncomplicated PEX, the risks of IOL decentration and PCO were low and comparable to control subjects.
