Abstract
PURPOSE : To report a rare case where desirable socket expansion was achieved with conformer trial alone in an adult patient with simple microphthalmia. METHOD: Clinical examination was done and found to have a contracted socket with short horizontal and
vertical fornices. Horizontal fissure was measured . Owing to absence of ciliary tenderness and her desire to opt for non-surgical intervention to improve the overall cosmesis in the right eye, she was given a trial of socket expansion with serial conformers whose size were increased in 2mm every monthly over 4 months , by when her socket had expanded from 18mm to 24 mm conformer. At this point a customized ocular prosthesis was dispensed with desirable cosmetic outcome. CONCLUSION: Good socket expansion can be achieved with conformers alone, even in adults with simple microphthalmia not associated with micro-orbitism or microphthalmic syndromes with acceptable prosthesis wear.
