Abstract
Retinopathy of Prematurity(ROP) is a proliferative retinal vascular disease affecting the premature infant with an incompletely vascularised retina. With an increased survival of very small infants , ROP has become one of the leading causes of childhood blindness.
Design: A prospective study was carried out
Method: From April 2023 to June 2023, 100 premature infants with birth weight < 2 Kg or
gestational age < 37 weeks admitted in NICU at Medical College and
Hospital, Kolkata were enrolled
Results: The overall incidence of ROP was 30%.Among 30 premature infants with Rop,33.33%
patients were in stage 1, 30.4% patients were in stage 2and 36.33% was in stage 3.As compared
with non ROP group, ROP infants had lower birth weight and shorter gestational age
Conclusion: Premature infant with low birth weight, shorter gestational age has high risk of
developing ROP.ROP screening and timely treatment are very important for preventing the
development of advanced ROP in premature infants
