Abstract
Study Design: Prospective Interventional Study
Purpose: To study the long-term efficacy and safety of presbyopic posterior chamber diffractive implantable phakic contact lens (IPCL) in presbyopic patients with myopia.
Methods: 48 eyes of 24 patients undergoing IPCL implantation. Outcomes measures were UNVA, UDVA, UIVA, visual quality, vault and endothelial cell loss (ECL) at 3 years.
Results: At 3 years, 75% eyes achieved UNVA of 20/40 or better; all eyes had UDVA 20/20 and UIVA 20/32 or better. Significant improvement in total HOAs (p=0.01) and Strehl ratio (p=0.004). Vault was 571.2±241.2 μm with significant decrease between 1 month and 3 years (p=0.001). Nuclear cataract formation necessitated phacoemulsification with IPCL removal in 6 eyes; mean time to surgery 22.3±13.2 months.
Conclusion: Presbyopic IPCL provides good visual outcomes and spectacle-independence at all distances. Nuclear cataract is an important association that may need surgical intervention in this age group.
