FP1143 : Epidemiology, etiology and outcomes of pediatric open globe injury in a tertiary eye care hospital

Abstract

Study design
Retrospective study
Purpose
To know the epidemiology, etiology and outcomes of pediatric open globe injury
Methods
Open globe injury patients who presented from October2021 to September2022 were studied. Their age, gender, cause of injury, time since presentation and visual outcomes at one year were recorded.
Results
Out of 93 patients 34 were below 16 years. Male to female ratio 3:2.Most of the injuries occurred at home 61.76% followed by outdoors 32.35% and at school 5.88%. The most common cause of injury was mechanical 91.17% followed by thermal/fire cracker injury 8.82%. 70.58% patients had vision < 6/18 after surgery. Vision was poor in patients with grade 4 injury, fire cracker injuries, delay in treatment and scar over the pupillary area. Four of them needed vitrectomy. Two of them landed in phthisical eye. No one had high intra ocular pressure >21 at one year.
Conclusion
About one third of the patients who presented with open globe injury were pediatric patients.
