FP1139 : Synergistic retinal pathologies: Diabetic Retinopathy and covert impact of MDMA-Induced hypertension

Abstract

38-year-old diabetic male presented with sudden bilateral diminution of vision since 20 days after consumption of MDMA. His best corrected vision was 6/18 in right eye and 6/9 in left eye .Anterior segment examination showed sluggish pupillary response in both eyes. Fundus examination of both eyes showed grade 4 hypertensive retinopathy changes and proliferative diabetic retinopathy with macular edema. BP was measured to be 140/90mmHg. He was advised PRP for both eyes and control of systemic status.
The follow up after 7 days revealed significant reduction in optic disc edema. These findings highlights a case of precipitation of pre existing retinopathy due to an acute surge in blood pressure following MDMA consumption.
