Study Design:Cross Sectional Community Based KAP Study
Purpose:Assess Prevalence of tobacco smoking, Awareness on ocular diseases associated with smoking, Attitude regarding cessation of smoking among medical students
Methods: 545 subjects selected by systematic sampling among medical students in a Tertiary Care Center from June 2022 to Dec 2022. Pretested & predesigned questionnaire given on smoking habits & its effects, called for interview & ocular effects of smoking discussed & smoking discouraged. After 1 month, called again for interview & behaviour regarding smoking cessation assessed.
Results:42% current smokers, 17.5% ex-smokers, rest non-smokers. Awareness on ocular effects of smoking present in 56% of current smokers & 91.2% of non-smokers, 77.2% among total study population.1 month later, 64.1% in pre-contemplation stage
Conclusion: Prevalence of smoking more in males < 20Y & > 30Y. Awareness on ocular s/e was satisfactory.Max number of Smokers in precontemplation stage
