Abstract
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study.
PURPOSE: To compare the incidence of bleb leaks following trabeculectomy in eyes which underwent the Frill peritomy vs a conventional fornix-based peritomy.
METHODS: 81 eyes underwent Frill peritomy (conjunctiva cut 1mm away from limbus) and 79 eyes underwent conventional peritomy (conjunctiva cut flush with limbus). The incidence of leaks and their management was compared between the techniques.
RESULTS: Incidence of leaks was significantly lower in the Frill group (2 vs 8 eyes, p=0.01). In the Frill group, both leaks resolved with conservative management while in the conventional group, 5 eyes needed conjunctival re-suturing.
CONCLUSIONS: The 'Frill' peritomy has fewer conjunctival complications compared to the conventional peritomy due to suturing of 2 anatomically similar tissues and hence improves safety while also providing better patient comfort.
