Study Design: Prospective Interventional Study
Purpose:To evaluate the efficacy of a risk stratification system in improving surgical outcome and minimizing complication rates of surgeries performed by residents.Methods:Ocular findings of 212 cataract cases operated by residents and faculty of all training levels was clinically analysed by risk stratification score by Muhtaseb et al. Chi-Square tests assessed the association between risk groups and intra-op complications. Results: A statistically significant increase in complication rates noted across risk groups: I-23.1%, II-24.7%, III-16.1%, and IV-70.6% (p-0.001) like Posterior capsule rupture, Vitreous loss, Zonule dehiscence, Nucleus drop, Iris prolapse. BCVA was noted to be 6/9-6/6 in 32.07%,6/12 in 21.69, 6/18 in10.84%, 6/24 in 11.32 , 6/60 in 9.90%.Conclusion: Higher risk scores were predictive of the risk of intraoperative complications and optimizes the visual outcome.
