FP1177 : Clinico-demographic profile and outcomes of ocular pediatric chemical injuries in Eastern India

Abstract

Purpose-To analyze clinico-demographic profile and outcomes of ocular chemical injuries in pediatric patients in eastern India.
Method- It is a retrospective case based study of patients aged less than 18 years who visited our cornea department from July 2018 to July 2023 with ocular chemical injury.
Results-Of 101 pediatric patients presented with ocular chemical burn 57.4%were males.39.6%belonged to the 0-5yr age group. Bilateral cases seen in 14.9%. 31.7% Patients belonged to very low socioeconomic background. 39.6% had alkali injury,20.8%acid injury &14.9%carbide gun and firecracker related injury.46 patients presented as grade 1 injury.28.1% and 21.8% underwent amniotic membrane grafting in RE & LE. Visual acuity was good around 43% in last visit.Common sequele was corneal scar&symblepheron.
Conclusion- Ocular chemical injury seen in pediatric group with commonest being cause being household misuse of chemicals in eastern India and prompt treatment prevents ghastly complication
