Abstract
STUDY DESIGN: prospective interventional cohort study
PURPOSE: electrophysiological changes in the retina following multiple sessions of multisport laser treatment in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
METHODS: 50 eyes with PDR underwent 3 sessions of PASCAL photocoagulation. ERG was recorded at baseline, 2 and 6 weeks after 2nd laser session. Mean changes in a and b wave amplitudes and implicit times were compared to baseline.
RESULTS: there was decrease in amplitude and increase in implicit time of a and b waves at 2 weeks. There was recovery of the electrical activity seen at the end of 6 weeks post treatment, but the values did not reach baseline. These variations were significantly higher for absolute values of a-wave compared to b-wave (P<0.05). It was also found that most of the eyes either retained or had improvement in their visual acuity at the end of treatment.
CONCLUSION: multi spot laser treatment is as effective as other conventional laser treatment.
