Abstract
Design: Retrospective observational analysis
Purpose: Toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) is an uncommon complication of vitreoretinal surgery
Materials and methods: An outbreak of TASS in 14 patients is described. Parameters were demography, type of surgery, phakic status, symptom onset, Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA), anterior segment features and consumables used. The consumables yielded a negative culture report.
Results: The median age was 49.07 ± 16.75. Pars plana vitrectomy, scleral fixating IOL (SFIOL) and silicone oil removal (SOR) were the surgeries done. 28.6% underwent prior uneventful phacoemulsification. Severe anterior chamber reaction in 14 (50%), circumcorneal congestion in 8, corneal edema in 11 (78.6%), hypopyon in 13 (92.8%) and fibrin membrane in 2 patients. BSS was deciphered as common denominator in all patients.
Conclusion: TASS should be considered a potential complication after vitrectomy and a prompt deduction of inciting agent is imperative
