Abstract
Study Design: Prospective, comparative
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of vitreo-retinal surgery on corneal endothelial cells by using different endotamponading agents.
Methods: Patients (n=32) were divided into three groups: C3F8 gas (group A), silicone oil (group B), and Ringer Lactate (group C). Corneal endothelial parameters were assessed preoperatively, at 1-month, and 3-month post-surgery. Intraoperative events and complications were recorded.
Results: Group A, B and C demonstrated a 5.3%, 10.9% and 9.3% decrease in cell density, respectively. Groups showed a significant difference in all endothelial cell parameters except average cell area and hexagonality.
Conclusion: Corneal endothelial cell damage following vitrectomy with different endotamponades is a crucial consideration in vitreoretinal surgery.
