FP1440 : Seven Year Postoperative Outcomes of IOL implantation in-the-bag vs Optic Capture in children

Abstract

Study Design: Prospective, randomized clinical trial
Purpose:Compare visual axis obscuration (VAO) and complications 7 years postoperatively in children < 4 years undergoing cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation using in-the-bag with anterior vitrectomy versus optic capture without anterior vitrectomy.
Materials and Methods: 61 eyes undergoing cataract surgery with IOL implantation included.Eyes randomized to Group I(n=30):in-the-bag IOL with anterior vitrectomy,or Group II (n=31):optic capture of IOL without anterior vitrectomy. Seven years postoperatively, VAO, glaucoma, other complications compared between groups.
Results: At 7 years followup, only one eye in optic capture group required secondary procedure compared to two in Group I. No incidence of glaucoma in group II. Visual acuity comparable at final followup between groups.
Conclusion: Optic capture of IOL without anterior vitrectomy is safe and comparable to in the bag implantation in the long term
