Abstract

Bitemporal hemianopia is the classical field defect of chiasmal involvement. In most of the cases the causes are pertaining to pituitary gland.
Our retrospective case series study is on 7 cases that presented to us with varying ophthalmic symptoms and after automated perimetry was found to have bitemporal hemianopia .All patients underwent systemic and radiological evaluation.Finally they were diagnosed with a myriad of lesions and not pituitary macroadenomas or craniopharyngiomas,as commonly expected. Optic nerve glioma, epidermoid cyst, ethambutol toxicity, AZOOR, trauma, TB arachnoiditis and meningioma were diagnosed.Here we attempt to highlight the unusual presentations of bitemporal hemianopias.We need to be vigilant in picking up other etiologies,like ethambutol optic neuropathy(incidence increased) and azoor whose treatment treatment protocol is so different. Management and prognosis varies according to the etiology.
