Abstract
Study design Retrospective analytical study
Purpose : To assess the risk factors and visual outcomes of NA- AION in patients below the age of 50 years .
Methods : Retrospective analytical study was conducted in patients below the age group of 50 years with NAION presenting within 2 weeks of onset of symptoms. Baseline clinical and demographic factors were determined . Mean age of the patients and risk factors were evaluated , four monthly follow up was done .
Result : Thirty patients with recent onset of NAION were included out of which 17 (56.7 % ) were male and 13 (43.3%) were female . Mean age was 45 years and ranged from 21 to 50 years . most prevalent risk factor was Diabetes ( 70% ) Small cup disk ratio (56.6 %) , hypertension ( 50 % ) . visual recovery was good (66.7 %) logMAR visual acuity was (0.42)
Conclusion : patients having systemic vascular diseases and small cup to disc ratio have increased risk for developing NAAION in age younger than 50 years .
