Abstract
Purpose
To investigate the effect of toxoplasma IgG avidity, IgG, and IgM in quantifying probable incubation period in primary Toxoplasma retinochoroiditis and its impact on clinical course and stage of infection
Methods
A retrospective analysis of cases diagnosed as primary toxoplasma.
Results
Twelve eyes of twelve individuals with active primary toxoplasma retinochoroiditis were included in the study. Toxoplasma IgG positivity was noted in all the cases while only one case had positive IgM. IgG avidity was high in all cases denoting a chronic infection. IgG avidity had positive correlation with duration of symptoms. Linear regression analysis showed incubation period between systemic infection and appearance as primary retinitis of at least five weeks.
Conclusions
High IgG avidity in primary ocular toxoplasmosis cases indicates late ocular presentation after systemic infection. However, IgG avidity positively correlated with disease duration but did not affect clinical treatment.
