Abstract
A prospective cohort study.Purpose: To ascertain the frequency of exposure keratopathy and microbes that dictate the ocular surface in mechanically ventilated patients.Methods: Carried out at a multispecialty hospital, where 40 patients admitted to an adult intensive care unit for a period of 1 year were included. Patients were examined by an ophthalmologist on day 3 and 7 .Corneal changes were assessed by fluorescein dye staining pattern along with photographic documentation and a conjunctival swab sent for culture and sensitivity. Keratopathy were treated and followed up.
Results: Out of the 40 patients , 35 had corneal changes.Staph epidermidis,S aureus and pseudomonas were most common .1 patient isolated candida auris in spite of good blink rate . Patients were treated with antibiotics and tarsorrhaphy and responded well . Resistant forms of pseudomonas were treated with colistin .Conclusion :Eye care is simple in ICU patients and frequent follow-ups help prevent complications.
