VT0244 : Orbital-Sinus Foreign Body Management: Challenges and Strategies for Large Angulated Wooden Objects

Abstract

Penetrating orbital injuries involving foreign bodies pose a challenging clinical scenario necessitating an interdisciplinary therapeutic approach. We present a case of 36-year-old male who initially presented with orbital cellulitis and perception of light following traumatic injury. A large angulated intra-orbital foreign body was discovered, closely abutting the inferior margin of the optic nerve, indenting the globe, and penetrating into the ipsilateral middle ethmoid air cells.
Following intravenous antibiotic administration, patient underwent trans nasal endoscopic mobilization of the angulated penetrating wooden foreign body, with a smooth and complete removal via the transconjunctival route. Remarkably, the patient's vision improved from perception of light to 6/12 at the 6-month follow-up. Therefore, highlights the effectiveness, minimally invasive transnasal endoscopic surgery combined with tranconjunctival approach in managing large angulated intra-orbital foreign bodies.
