FP0408 : PFCL bubble assisted full thickness macular hole closure: Comparison and outcomes of novel technique

Abstract

Purpose: To describe the technique and compare outcomes between PFCL bubble assisted placement of inverted ILM flaps with conventional inverted ILM flap technique for medium and large full thickness macular holes.
Study design: Retrospective single surgeon study
Methods: Retrospective study of 57 eyes, 36 using the PFCl bubble for inverted ILM flap positioning and 21 using conventional technique. Mean size of macular holes> 400 microns were included. Co-morbidities, previous macular hole surgeries were excluded. Outcomes compared were closure rates, type of closure and incidence of gliotic changes, flap related complications and BCVA.
Results: Group A (PFCL) eyes had a 100% hole closure rate and Group B (Conventional) 92.30%. No flap related complications in Group A. BCVA and gliotic changes post hole closure were comparable.
Conclusion:PFCL assisted inverted flap positioning has a significantly higher closure rates, more predictable results, and comparable BCVA.
