VT0055 : A Novel graft substitute post pterygium excision using Platelet-rich fibrin graft

Abstract

Pterygium is a common ocular surface disease that arises from the degenerated conjunctiva and underlying tenon’s capsule resulting from abnormal fibrovascular proliferation of cells. There are many approaches for its treatment post pterygium excision ranging from bare sclera, conjunctival closure, conjunctival autograft and amniotic membrane transplantation. The main concern following its excision remains recurrence which varies widely within these methods. Although no gold standard technique is defined to prevent its recurrence, conjunctival autografts remain the preferred choice of ocular reconstruction post-excision. After thoroughly reviewing the literature, we present a novel method using a Platelet-rich fibrin membrane as an autologous, biocompatible graft that can be sutured or secured with fibrin glue for ocular reconstruction post-primary pterygium surgery. Although the rate of recurrence is yet to be established, the healing process in such cases is impressive.
