VT0273 : Taming the beauty and beast of trabeculectomy

Abstract

Trabeculectomy is an excellent surgery–when it succeeds. To ensure that, many hurdles have to be overcome along the way. Antifibrotic agents have revolutionized the success rates, but at the same time have created their own set of problems too. Complications of trabeculectomy can begin right from anesthesia and then proceed through each step of the surgery such as conjunctival buttonholes, flap complications, over/under filtration, malignant glaucoma and suprachoroidal haemorrhage. Each bleb is different, the survival of which is highly dependent on the postoperative management. Meticulous intraoperative technique and watchful postoperative care helps us in achieving the goal of target intraocular pressure. This teaching video bouquet will showcase different intraoperative complications during trabeculectomy and the practical management of the same. We will also highlight relevant postoperative complication management with parallel clinical photos and imaging techniques.
