Study Design: Case Report
Purpose: To report a rare case of orbital myiasis following ocular trauma.
Method: A 61years old diabetic patient presented with history of ocular injury 2years ago followed by non-healing ulcerative lesion (6x4cm) at lateral canthus of her right eye along with bleeding & foul-smelling discharge. After instillation of ether into the wound, 47 maggots were removed & preserved in 10% formalin.
Result: CT Scan showed soft tissue swelling of right orbit. Entomological evaluation revealed larvae of Lucilia sericata. Regular dressing was done. I.V. antibiotics, analgesics &Tab Ivermectin were given. 1% Ivermectin drop was instilled 4times/day for 1week.
Conclusion: The patient recovered well post-operatively and discharged uneventfully.
Clinical implications: Ocular trauma is a risk factor for orbital myiasis. Timely removal of larvae will prevent destruction of orbital tissues.
