Abstract

Purpose :Tackling small pupil in phacoemulsification through a novel technique of sphincterotomy using vitrectomy micro scissors
Method :We performed sphincterotomies in a case of small pupil using vitrectomy micro scissor. The sphincterotomies were fashioned in such a way that total of four were placed in four quadrants in order to cause minimum pupillary distortion postoperatively. After achieving adequate mydriasis with these sphincterotomies, rest of the phacoemulsification was performed in usual manner.
Result :Intraoperative sphincterotomies with vitreous micro scissor helped to achieve good intraoperative mydriasis smoothening the phacoemulsification of nucleus in cataract surgery and reduced total surgical time by avoiding extra step of introducing iris hooks or other pupil expanders.
