Study Design: Retrospective Interventional
Purpose: First case series from India to evaluate the long-term results of combined Bent Angled Needle Goniotomy (BANG) with Phacoemulsification in the primary open angle glaucoma.
Method: 30 eyes of 22 patients analysed over 12 months. Effect on IOP & anti-glaucoma medications were analyzed.
Results: A statistically significant decrease in IOP at 3rd and 6th months postoperatively noted.(5.72mmHg and 4.67mmHg respectively). However, by 12 month became statistically insignificant. 22 out of 30 eyes (73.33%) showed an initial reduction in IOP greater than 20%, and 17 out of 30 eyes (56.67%) had a statistically significant reduction in AGMs by the end of 12 months(p<0.001). Sub-analysis based on severity of glaucoma showed a greater IOP reduction in severe glaucoma cases compared to mild and moderate.
Conclusion: IOP reduction with BANG is short-lived. BANG is however, effective in reducing AGM load of patients undergoing phacoemulsification.
