FP0967 : Atropine in Pediatric Unilateral Cataract Patients: A Study on Axial Length and Myopia Progression

Abstract

Study Design : Prospective Study
Purpose: To evaluate the effects of Atropine 0.01% in patients aged 4 to 12 years with unilateral pediatric cataract, compared to a placebo, on axial length elongation, myopia progression, spectacle dependence.
Methods: Study Groups:
Group 1: 16 patients with unilateral pediatric cataract received Atropine 0.01% eye drops twice a day.
Group 2 : 19 patients with unilateral pediatric cataract received a lubricant eye drops as a placebo.
Outcome Measures: Axial length elongation. Myopia progression.
Results: Group 1 showed a significantly lower rate of axial length elongation and myopia progression compared to Group 2.Patients in Group 1 had reduced spectacle dependence compared to Group 2 . Patients in Group 1 experienced faster BCVA recovery and more efficient rehabilitation.
Conclusion:
These findings suggest that Atropine may be a beneficial intervention in managing operated pediatric cataract patients and minimizing the myopic shift.
