FP0957 : Intracranial space occupying lesions (ICSOL) in Ophthalmology – A retrospective study

Abstract

Aim:To examine myriad neuro-ophthalmic (N-O) manifestations and clinical melange of ICSOL in adults.
Methods:Retrospective analysis of 30 patients included(above 16 yrs)seen at a tertiary eyecare center, over 6 months with primary ICSOL,confirmed by neuroimaging, was done.Pituitary macroadenomas and metastatic lesions were excluded.
Results:Out of 30 patients,age between 18-75 years,19 were primarily diagnosed by us to have ICSOL.73% had N-O complaints(43% diminution of vision,10% visual field defects, 7% diplopia,3% proptosis).Headache in 33% 77% sella location.Histopathologically, commonest was meningioma(37%),then schwannoma (30%).
Conclusion:Nearly two third cases had purely N-O manifestations as their major symptom. Also the N-O clinic was the first consultation even for headache, that heralded something bigger than expected, thus emphasizing the importance of detailed N-O workup that aids in early diagnosis and prompt management of ICSOLs. Eyes are indeed windows to the brain!
