STUDY DESIGN: Prospective Observational Study
PURPOSE:To establish trend of corneal sensations following Phaco(PCS) & manual small incision cataract surgeries (MSICS).
METHODS:Patients ≥40 yrs undergoing cataract surgeries had baseline corneal sensations measured pre-operatively with Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer. Patients were followed up at 1 week,6 weeks,3 & 6 months post-surgery. The sensations quantified in the various zones of the cornea were analysed & correlation to the placement of the surgical incisions were studied.
RESULTS:Corneal sensations were adversely affected in both study groups,statistically more in immediate post-op period. The recovery was significantly quicker in PCS group (by 3 month & complete in 6 months) whereas SICS group reaching near normal values only by 6 month follow up visit.
CONCLUSION:Both study groups exhibited a linear recovering trend of the sensations, with a faster recovery in the PCS group reaching the baseline values.
