Abstract
Electrical insults to the human body range from death to damage to various parts of the body. It can result in a wide range of ocular injuries with resultant ocular complications.
Of these, cataract due to electrocution can occur after a latent period and can then progress with startling rapidity. However, proper surgical management can result in good and stable visual acuity as is seen in this case. The incidence of electrical cataract varies from 0.7% to 8%.
We report a case of bilateral anterior subcapsular cataract in a 36 year old male, who had sustained a high voltage electric injury on his head 1 year back. He had no other ocular abnormality. Best corrected visual acuity was 6/24 in both eyes. The patient was managed with SICS and PCIOL implantation.
The majority of cases respond well to surgery, but final visual acuity will depend on the other ocular damage due to electrical current.
