Abstract
Abstract:- To evaluate the clinical profile response to Dexamethasone treatment and visual function outcome in Indian patient with acute optic neuritis
Materials and methods:- we conducted an observational study of patient with optic neuritis who were treated with intravenous Dexamethasone ( 50mg in 150ml of 5% dextrose over 1-2 hr daily for three consecutive days followed by 1mg/kg body wt oral dose for 11 days) and had completed at least 1year follow up. Parameter assessed included visual acuity, colour vision, contrast sensitivity and RAPD.All 10 patient were assessed for all visual function parameter.
Result:- Improvement in visual acuity was noted 24 hrs after 1st dose, near vision and colour vision showed significant improvement 24hrs after 3rd dose.
Conclusion:-Treatment with 50mg intravenous pulsed Dexamethasone leads to rapid recovery of vision in acute optic neuritis without any serious side effect.
