FP0680 : “Smoke in the water”-Liquid Tobacco use in North East India

Abstract

Study Design: Retrospective case series
Purpose:Liquid tobacco locally known as “Tuibur” or “Hidakphu” is widely consumed by certain indigenous tribal communities of North East India. Toxic-Nutritional optic neuropathy (TNON) may develop with prolonged use. The purpose of this study is to report reversible TNON in 27 young and healthy tribal patients.
Methods: A detailed medical and dietary history was taken. Clinical evaluation along with visual fields and OCT studies were done. All patients were started on oral vitamin B complex supplementation for a period of 3 months.
Results: All 27 patients who had presented with bilateral diminution of vision had a statistically significant (P<.05) improvement in visual acuity and visual field indices after treatment
Conclusion :TNON may be caused by a multitude of agents. Treatment involves replacing deficient nutrients and eliminating offending toxins. It is also important to consider contributory cultural and dietary practices.
