FP0673 : Revolutionizing Diabetic Retinopathy Screening in rural Population: Smartphone versus fundus camera

Abstract

PURPOSE
Comparing the efficiency of Diabetic Retinopathy detection by smartphone based mydriatic fundoscopy versus non-mydriatic fundus camera to improve screening of diabetic retinopathy in rural population to facilitate early detection.

METHOD
A Descriptive study was done on 140 diabetic patients attending Out Patient Department of Ophthalmology Rural hospital. All patients underwent a fundus examination by Fundus camera, smartphone based funduscopy,Indirect ophthalmoscopy and were interpreted.

RESULTS
Out of 280 eyes, the sensitivity and specificity for detection of diabetic retinopathy in smartphone was found to be 93.10% and 93.97%,in fundus camera 88.13% and 93.42%.Smartphone based fundoscopy yielded the best image quality.
CONCLUSION
This study proves both smartphone and fundus camera imagining meets DR screening requirements in an outreach setting.Smartphone based fundoscopy is better as screening tool for DR however not all devices are suitable in terms of image quality.
