Abstract
Study Design-Observational descriptive
Purpose-To report a case of sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) following trauma despite timely surgical intervention.
METHODS-A young male presented with a corneo-limbal-scleral laceration following penetrating injury to right eye (RE).Prompt surgical repair was done and VA of 6/60 was gained at discharge.Left eye (LE) VA was 6/6, N6.He presented a month later with decreased vision in both eyes.RE examination revealed VA of FC close to face, anterior chamber reaction 4+, Grade 3 vitritis with multiple neurosensory detachments.LE had a similar picture of milder intensity.Further probing revealed that patient discontinued oral steroids 7 days after discharge. He received IV methylprednisolone for 4 days followed by oral steroids for 3 months.
RESULTS-A final VA of 6/12(RE) and 6/6(LE) was gained post-3 months of steroid therapy.
CONCLUSION- SO, a serious vision threatening disease, can be prevented by promptly repairing a penetrating ocular injury.
