Abstract

STUDY DESIGN Retrospective PURPOSE-Study trend of peripheral hyperopic defocus in progressing myopic patients & effect of myopia control strategy METHODS 137 pediatric patients with progressive myopia. Peripheral RE was measured using open field autorefractor WAM-5500 in central 60* of retina in 10* steps. Patients with HD were advised spectacles with defocus lenslets or orthokeratology contact lenses (OKCL). Patients with no HD treated with atropine 0.01% eyedrop (LDA).RESULTS Of 137 patients, 80 (58.39%) had MD & 57 (41.60%) had HD. Average HD & MD were 1.35D (0.50-6.38) and 1.30D (0.60-4.62). Out of 57 patients, 40 (29.19%) opted defocus glasses, 3 (2.2%) chose OKCL, 12 (8.75%) opted LDA whereas 2 parents were unsure. Out of 80 having MD, 78 (56.93%) were started on LDA.CONCLUSION Prevalence of HD was lower than MD in our cohort. Role of peripheral hyperopic defocus in myopia progression and myopia control strategies that address HD needs further evaluation in Indian population.
