FP3112 : What lies underneath pushes its way to surface again: Post pterygium excision donor site dilemma

Abstract

Purpose: To describerare complication, pyogenic granuloma at the donor site post pterygium excision with conjunctival autografting technique

Methods: 23 Y/M presented grade 2 nasal progressive pterygium LE for which pterygium excision with CAG transplantation done. Post op period uneventful,Patient was started on topical steroids- antibiotic drops with lubricating drops.Day 15th pt came with reddish mass 6x5mm in superonasal quadrant, suggestive of pyogenic granuloma at donor site. Intraocular pressure was 54mmHg ? Steroid responder.
Results:Patient was given iv mannitol 200 cc f/b topical timolol & brinzolamide,loteprednol 0.5% in tapering dose, CMC 0.5% & oral prednisolone 40mg in tapering dose.
Conjunctivilization of donor site was complete over 4 weeks. No surgical intervention was needed.
Conclusion: PG at the donor site rare complication, possibly due to exposure of Tenon’s capsule with permanent friction of the upper eyelid leading to an overgrowth of the exposed tissue.
