Abstract
Purpose: To report the clinical spectrum of bulbar conjunctival rhinosporidiosis
Methods: Retrospective chart review of biopsy proven ocular adnexal rhinosporidiosis over a five-year period (2017 – 2022). Demographic details, clinical presentation, management interventions, and outcomes in bulbar conjunctival rhinosporidiosis were documented
Results: A total of 63 cases of ocular adnexal rhinosporidiosis were included –32 cases involved the lacrimal sac (50.8%), 30 involved the conjunctiva (47.6%) and one involved the cornea (1.6%). The bulbar conjunctival cases comprised 22.2% of all adnexal cases. All bulbar cases underwent excision with five (35.7%) requiring a patch graft for scleral thinning
Conclusions:Bulbar conjunctival involvement comprised nearly half of all conjunctival cases. Though most do well with excision of the granuloma, some may progress to scleral thinning with staphyloma formation that may need major tectonic intervention to protect the integrity of the eyeball
