FP2919 : ”PRESERVING INNOCENCE ” “STUDY OF TRAUMATIC ENDOPHTHALMITIS IN PEDIATRIC POPULATION IN SOUTH INDIA

Abstract

Study design: Retrospective observational study
Purpose : To study the clinical & microbiological profile of traumatic endophthalmitis in the pediatric
population (<15 yrs.)
Methods :16 pediatric cases diagnosed with traumatic endophthalmitis were studied demographic data, clinical presentations, microbiological findings, surgical interventions, and long-term visual outcomes.
Results :Mean presentation age of 7.65 years, predominantly affecting young males. Microbiological analyses unveiled the prevalence of alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus pneumoniae as the dominant pathogen (50%). Core vitrectomy with injection of intravitreal antibiotics was done in 87.5% .Good visual outcomes in 50% of cases were achieved at final follow up .However, a proportion of cases (18.75%)unfortunately progressed to phthisis bulbi.
Conclusion :Successful anatomical and functional outcome can be attained in children with posttraumatic endophthalmitis with early presentation , prompt and aggressive treatment.
