Purpose:
To illustrate a rare case of retinal glial hamartoma masquerading as a malignant tumour.
Methods:
A young female presented with diminution of vision in right eye for 3 months. Presenting Snellen’s visual acuity in right eye was 3/60. Indirect ophthalmoscopy showed hazy media with exudative retinal detachment with a mass lesion. Ultrasonography showed a RD without mass lesion. MRI showed a well circumscribed chorioretinal lesion with features suggestive of choroidal hemangioma. On fundus imaging, a whitish fungating mass resembling a retinoblastoma was seen. Diagnostic confirmation was done using pars-plana vitrectomy.
Results:
Histopathology report showed cellular fragments in a fibrillary background. Immunostains were positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein thus confirming the diagnosis as glial hamartoma.
Conclusion:
Retinal glial hamartomas can masquerade malignant tumours and hence careful evaluation is necessary for diagnostic confirmation.
