Abstract

Penetrating eye injuries caused by pecking of birds are extremely uncommon. This retrospective study was performed among patients coming to tertiary eye care center of L V Prasad Eye Institute in South India from 2011 to 2019 with a history of bird attack causing eye injury. Out of the 27 patients, 18 (66.6%) were males and 9 (33.3%) were females. The mean age was 20.46 years (range 0.5-65 years). Only 2 patients showed scleral involvement and most of the injuries were restricted to Zone I. 19 patients were having length of corneal tear > 4 mm. Average time between the injury and the surgery was 48 hours (2 days). At final follow up at 3 years, 11 (40.74%) patients had VA worse than 20/800, 6 (22.22%) patients had VA between 20/100-20/800 and 10(37.03%) patients achieved VA better than 20/80.
